Course Overview

The OHE (Certificate in Oral Health Education) course is a valuable qualification for dental nurses that are hoping to further their careers. All our courses are fully accredited by the NEBDN (National Examining Board of Dental Nurses).

The course duration will be between 9 – 12 months depending on the start date target exam. The course schedule is discussed and agreed upon by the learner and their designated course tutor.

Students enrolled on this course will need to keep up to date with the work and complete their ROC to a high standard to be eligible for the exam.

The online course provides:
· Full tutor support and guidance via E-mail, telephone or Zoom/Teams
· All educational material and guidance on how to complete the NEBDN record of competence (ROC)
· All lectures with voiceovers to make learning easier and more enjoyable
· ROC provided in the cost of the course
· Personal student log in to the training website
· Oral Health Education NEBDN Syllabus comprehensively covered
· Personalised ROC completion plan to help keep students on track

This post qualification certificate will require direct supervision for each oral health session by one or more witnesses within the practice. Any qualified member of staff can witness the student advising patients to complete your ROC. You can have one or more witnesses, for example a hygienist, therapist, dentist or a dental nurse that holds the OHE qualification.

The mentor is the person accepting overall responsibility to help you mentally and throughout your training, they do not have to witness you. Your tutor will contact the mentor with progress reports to inform them of your academic progress and to get feedback on your clinical experiences at work.

Part A – PCAS (Practical competence assessment sheets)

Students are required to see 7 patients and give direct advice on a variety of specific topics, 4 patients are seen twice, the remaining 3 need to be seen for one visit. Students must then fill out a (Practical competency assessment sheet) PCAS for each session and this is marked by the tutor.

The sessions will be overseen by a qualified clinician and the clinician will need to provide appropriate feedback. All of this is recorded on the NEBDN platform called pebblepad if your using a desktop or pebblepocket if you use a mobile device.

5 of the patient groups below (1-7) need to be targeted and all the topics A-G need to be covered: Patient group range:

· Pregnant/Nursing mother
· Parents of pre-school children (4 and under)
· Parents of school children (5-11)
· Adolescent (12-15)
· Adult (16-64)
· Seniors (65+)

· Special needs/medically compromised groups (this means an appointment has to be specifically adapted to suit that particular patient)

Topics to cover for the 4 patients that you will see twice:

A. Prevention of caries
B. Prevention and control of periodontal disease
C. Prevention of further non carious tooth surface loss
D. Oral conditions

Topics to cover for the 3 patients that you will see once:

The student will then decide on 1 patient that they wish to expand into case study. The case study has to be between 2250-2750. The patient will be seen for a minimum of 3 visits but the third visit can be in the form of a follow up telephone call or questionnaire. Evidence of research and referencing around subjects covered in the case study will be expected to be demonstrated in the presentation of the students work.
