NEBDN Certificate in Oral Health Education

The Certificate In Oral Health Education is a valuable qualification for Dental Nurses that are hoping to further their careers. This course is fully accredited by the National Examining Board of Dental Nurses.
The course duration will be between 9 – 12 months depending on the month of enrolment. Examinations are now held in Manchester.
The online course provides:
- Course duration of nine months or a year to help fulfill the demanding syllabus set by the NEBDN and to allow time for completion of the compulsory record of competency (ROC)
- Tutor support and guidance via E-mail and telephone
- All educational material and guidance on how to complete the NEBDN compulsory ROC included in the total price
- All lectures notes and the compulsory ROC provided
- Personal student log in to the training website with regular tests and homework
- Full written mock examination in your own environment
The Certificate in Oral Health Education is for qualified dental nurses already on the GDC Register. Students enrolled on this course will need to keep up to date with the work set after the lecture is made available and their complete their ROC to a high standard to be eligible for the exam
In Jan 2016 the NEBDN restructured the record of competency and examination content, students are now no longer required to complete essays as part of the final exam and no longer sit an oral element for the qualification.
This post graduate certificate will require direct supervision one or more witnesses within the practice. The mentor will be the person accepting overall responsibility to help you throughout your training and will be the person your tutor will contact with progress reports but they do not have to supervise your visits if you do not wish. Any qualified member can witness you advising patients, you can have one or a few members of your team, for example a Hygienist, Therapist, Dentist or a Dental Nurse that holds the OHE qualification (a copy of their qualification certificate is required as proof). One of the above has to supervise each of your visits during your training, please visit the FAQ in our information section regarding the witnessing.
Students are required to see 7 patients and give direct advice on a variety of specific topics, 4 patients are seen twice, the other 3 only need to be seen for one visit. Students must then fill out a PCA for each session, the sessions will be overseen by a qualified clinician and the clinician will need to provide appropriate feedback.
5 of the patient groups below (1-7) need to be targeted and all the topics A-G need to be covered:
Patient group range:
- Pregnant/Nursing mother
- Parents of pre-school children (4 and under)
- Parents of school children (5-11)
- Adolescent (12-15)
- Adult (16-64)
- Seniors (65+)
- Special needs/medically compromised groups
Topics to cover for the 4 patients that you will see twice:
A. Prevention of caries
B. Prevention and control of periodontal disease
C. Prevention of further non carious tooth surface loss
D. Oral conditions
Topics to cover for the 3 patients that you will once:
E. Care of Dentures
F. Maintenance of health associated with fixed or removable appliances (implants, crowns, bridges)
G. Care of orthodontic appliances
The student will then decide on 1 patient that they wish to expand into case study, Which has to be between 2250-2750. This patient needs to be seen for a minimum of 3 visits but the third visit can be in the form of a follow up telephone call or questionnaire. Evidence of research and referencing around subjects covered in the case study will be expected to be demonstrated in the presentation of the students work.
Supplementary Outcome 1
Choose a specific target group for the production of an exhibition. The exhibition may include a talk but must be produced, displayed and evaluated by the candidate. A report of between 900-1100 words must be submitted covering background information on the target group, objectives, method of planning and resources, method of evaluation and reflective practice
Supplementary Outcome 2
A record of your CPD must be kept during your training that is specifically related to benefit your OHE qualification, this can involve courses, reading, meetings but must be within the past 12 months
This is a 90 minute MCQ and EMCQ’S written examination. No other examinations will be required.
