Theory first
Five modules covering fluoride science, patient assessment, clinical application, professional law, and managing fluoride refusal. Read the content, then sit the 15-question MCQ to unlock the next module.

Written assessment
Three written tasks unlocked after completing all modules. Download the task document, complete offline, and upload your answers directly in the platform.

Fluoride Varnish Application

The Certificate in fluoride varnish is for qualified dental nurses already on the GDC Register.

Practical portfolio
A 10-entry clinical logbook covering all required patient groups, two case studies, and an end-of-course reflective account – all submitted through the platform.

Course Structure

This post qualification will require the direct supervision for each topical fluoride application by one or more clinical supervisor within the practice. Any qualified member of staff can supervise you applying fluoride to complete your clinical logbook.

Five theory modules
Each module must be completed and its MCQ passed before the next unlocks. Written and practical work unlock once all five theory modules are complete.

Assessment
How you are assessed?
No exams. Assessment is through MCQs, written tasks, your clinical logbook, and a final reflective account. All submitted and reviewed online.

MCQ – 15 questions per module
A 15-question multiple choice quiz at the end of each module. You must pass before moving to the next module. You can retake if needed.

Written tasks (x3)
Three written tasks on consent, GDC registrant responsibilities, and fluoride science. Download the task sheet, complete it, and upload your answers.

Clinical logbook (10 entries)
Log each supervised fluoride varnish application, including patient group, caries risk, product used, prescription confirmation, medical considerations and reflection. Upload completed logbook pages.

Case studies (x2)
Two extended case studies covering full patient assessment, consent, application technique, challenges and reflection. Upload as part of your practical portfolio.

End-of-course reflective account (300–500 words)
A final reflective account drawing on your learning and clinical experience across the course. Written directly in the platform or uploaded as a document.
