Oral Health Education – Course Overview

The BDA Oral Health Education (OHE) programme is a nationally recognised qualification designed to equip dental nurses with the knowledge and skills required to deliver high-quality oral health advice and support. On successful completion, nurses will be awarded the BDA Certificate in Oral Health, a qualification approved by the General Dental Council (GDC) and created in collaboration with OHE Southwest.

The course typically runs for 6–9 months depending on the start date. With eight intakes throughout the year, learners benefit from flexibility and do not need to wait long before beginning their studies. This structured programme gives dental nurses the confidence and authority to provide effective OHE sessions without direct supervision, although these must be delivered under the prescription of a trained GDC registrant. By completing the course, participants will gain valuable professional development that enhances their role within the dental team and strengthens patient care.

Practical portfolio Requirements

  • Produce two detailed lesson plans for oral health sessions, based on hypothetical patients we will provide.
  • Plan and deliver six oral health sessions to patients referred by your supervising dentist.
  • Design, produce, and evaluate an educational display for your workplace or a public setting such as a school, nursery, or nursing home.

  • Have access to radiographic equipment for completion of the portfolio.

Examination information

The final BDA examination is held online and may be taken from the comfort and convenience of your home or workplace. This assessment is 60 minutes in length and takes place on a Saturday. The exam is scheduled three times per year in March, September, and November and consists of 30 multiple-choice questions followed by two case study scenarios to test applied knowledge.

Course Content

The programme includes 27 BDA online modules, carefully designed to be completed in eight weeks, supported by seven quizzes and a practice test. Once these are finished, learners will be fully prepared to work with patients and begin writing their portfolios.

The portfolio must be completed within four months and submitted three weeks prior to the final exam. All required target dates for online modules and portfolio submissions are clearly set out under your BDA login, helping learners to stay organised and on track.
